Manchester United defender Phil Jones has been diagnosed with shingles, and he could miss an entire month. England-Under-21 manager Stuart Pearce confirmed the diagnosis.

It was thought that Jones had a good chance to start in the match against Fulham last Saturday ,but the defender was omitted from the line-up through illness. He was then called up by Pearce to feature in the England under 21 squad but has since been withdrawn due to shingles. It is unlikely that Jones will be able to play any part in United's Champions League encounter next week when they face Real Madrid in Spain. Pearce is disappointed that Jones will not feature for his side's international against Sweden on Tuesday.

"It's a shame," Pearce said. "You want your good players to be here. But Phil has picked up shingles and there's not a lot we can do about it. But it means someone else gets a chance."

Jones missed the beginning of United's season due to injury problems, and the defender is hopeful that he will be included in Pearce's Under-21 squad for the European championships this summer. Jones will be disappointed to have to miss even more time out, especially when it looked like the player was finally starting to regain his top form.
