Manchester United and Scotland midfielder Darren Fletcher has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after it was confirmed that he will undergo surgery to try and cure his ulcerative colitis. Fletcher did feature for United this season and looked as if his comeback was complete but is now facing another long road to save his career.
Fletcher was diagnosed with the condition last season after he was forced to miss the majority of United's campaigns. United revealed the midfielder would need plenty of rest and there was some feeling that Fletcher would not be able to return at all. He seemed to put the condition behind him however, this season when he finally was a part of the squad again even scoring a goal.
This fresh setback will no doubt be devastating for Fletcher but he has much positive support from United and Scotland. Sir Alex Ferguson believes the midfielder will return in July and be ready to assume a holding midfielder role. Ferguson believes that the surgery gives Fletcher the best possible chance of a full recovery. Ferguson went on to praise the character of Fletcher who is a huge admirer of his professionalism and battling qualities both on and off the pitch. An extremely popular figure in the Old Trafford dressing room, everyone connected to the club will be hoping for a swift recovery for Fletcher.
