Manchester United defeated one of their toughest rivals Liverpool 2-1 at Old Trafford on Sunday and also maintained their seven point advantage at the top of the Premier League table. That hard fought victory may have come at a bit of a price however, as key players Ashley Young and Nemanja Vidic picked up injuries and could not complete the full 90 minutes of the game.
Young landed awkwardly on his knee late in the first half and although was able to continue, was replaced by Sir Alex Ferguson at halftime. Antonio Valencia came in to fill the gap left by Young. Vidic also appeared to have landed on his knee after a tough challenge and was also substituted late in the match for Chris Smalling.
United are now left sweating over the fitness of the two players and with big matches coming up, West Ham in the FA Cup on Wednesday and Tottenham in the Premier League on Sunday, Ferguson will be hoping his two first team starters will not be out for a long period of time. Young and Vidic will be assessed on Monday and news on their injuries should be forthcoming shortly thereafter.
Jonny Evans is expected to miss the West Ham clash after the defender picked up a hamstring injury. Ferguson revealed this was the reason why the Northern Ireland defender did not play a part against Liverpool on Sunday.Tags: Ashley Young, Jonny Evans, Liverpool, Manchester, Manchester United, Nemanja Vidic, Premier League, Sir Alex Ferguson, Soccer
