Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic is set to make his return to the first team this weekend when the Red Devils take on Sunderland at Old Trafford. Vidic was thought to be available for last Sunday's match against Manchester City but Sir Alex Ferguson felt it was too soon.
Vidic has been out of action since September with an injury to the same knee that prevented him from featuring in the bulk of United's 2011-12 season. United have been very cautious over the return of Vidic, wanting to be sure the defender's knee problems were completely healed before allowing him to take part in games. There were many reports stating that Vidic was well ahead of schedule and that he would be in contention for a start in the Manchester derby. Ferguson immediately shot those reports down, stating that throwing his captain into such a huge game right away would be detrimental to his recovery.
The Sunderland match is a different matter and Ferguson believes it could be the perfect game for Vidic to make his return in. Of course United also need the cover since Jonny Evans picked up an injury in the City match. Evans is struggling with a hamstring injury and is unlikely to play in the Sunderland match.Tags: Jonny Evans, Manchester, Manchester United, Premier League, Sir Alex Ferguson, Soccer, Sunderland
