Manchester United have received very good news that defender Nemanja Vidic is in line to make his first team return next week in the Champions League. Vidic has been out of action since September with a knee injury.

Vidic had to undergo surgery on the same knee that prevented the defender from featuring in most of United's 2011-12 season in September. Originally, Sir Alex Ferguson was told he would be without his captain for up to eight weeks and that he would be available sometime during the Christmas period. A few weeks ago, the Red Devils were dealt a bad blow when it was reported that Vidic's injury return was progressing slowly and that he would be out until the New Year.

The injury update has taken yet another turn however, as Ferguson has now reported that his star central defender is ready to return to the first team and could feature against Cluj at Old Trafford. Vidic has returned to full training and, although he lacks match fitness, Ferguson would be comfortable playing him against the Romanian team.

"For the last year and a half, I think he's only played around 10 or 12 games (13)," Ferguson said. "The best way forward for us is to listen to Vida himself. He has the experience to know what's best for him and know when the time is right to come back into the team. He started training in the week and he did okay. He hasn't been involved in the real competitive part but at least he's back training with the first team. It would be nice to play him on Wednesday [against Cluj]. I wouldn't be adverse to playing him on Wednesday. I think he's done all his work but he needs matches."

Ferguson knows how important having fit defenders is to winning trophies and with Chris Smalling and Phil Jones making their comebacks from respective injuries, United's defensive options have been slowly increasing. Should Vidic play Wednesday and come through fine, he could potentially feature for United in the huge Manchester derby on December 9th at the Etihad Stadium.
