ESPN FC has reported that Manchester United are closely monitoring Wesley Sneijder's situation at Inter Milan. Sneijder's new contract talks have broken down with the Italian club over wages and United could be set to make a bid for the midfielder in the January transfer window.
United were heavily linked with the Dutch international in the the summer of 2011 but a potential deal eventually broke down over Sneijder's high wage demands. New contract negotiations with Inter have failed however, with the Serie A giants requesting that Sneijder take a pay cut. The Italian club has now suggested they may sell Sneijder as soon as January and Sir Alex Ferguson is on high alert for the midfielder.
United would also be interested in sending Nani, possibly to Inter, in a deal for Sneijder. The Portuguese winger is reported to be increasingly unhappy at Old Trafford and Inter could be a possible destination for the player. ESPN FC also reports however, that regardless of where Nani goes, Ferguson will still be interested in bringing Sneijder to Old Trafford. Ferguson does not want to miss out on a player of Sneijder's qualities if he suddenly becomes available and for cheap.
United's midfield also needs strengthening with Paul Scholes set to retire for the second time at the end of this season. Ferguson sees Sneijder as being able to provide the team with better use of possession and a more dangerous attack. Sneijder has been left out of a number of Inter's games so far this season with the club wishing to resolve his contract issues before he plays. The Dutch playmaker is set to miss out on Inter's Serie A match against Palermo on Sunday.
